The suggestion that this Senate race deserves a do-over is irritating to say the least. For the past four months -- THAT'S FOUR MONTHS -- good people, Republicans and Democrats, have struggled to get the recount right. In this legal phase the burden of proof has been on Coleman to prove mistakes were made. Where is the proof? After five weeks of testimony there is no smoking gun to show that Coleman was robbed.
The question increasingly for Norm Coleman is what is this doing to his political future? Clearly his Republican allies in Washington are continuing to offer to raise money for legal challenges. If you haven't checked out the YouTube pitch, here it is:
But Rep. John Boehner and Sen. Jim Inhofe and all the other stars of the "Donate Money to Norm" video don't vote in Minnesota. In 2000, Vice President Al Gore made a classy exit from his legal challenge. Norm Coleman is the obvious Republican frontrunner for governor in 2010 (that is if TPaw does not in fact run). But political capital is not infinite.
Soon, any week now, it will be warm here. And for those of us locked in the polar freeze since before the election, there will be that wonderful reawakening in Minnesota that reminds us, yeah, it is great to live here. This endless winter is almost behind us. This Senate race should be too.
