| In the Red Sox games on NESN (I'm sure other stations do it to)as a batter comes
to bat graphics will be come on screen showing what the batter has done in each
inning. I have no idea what they mean. It dosent just say strike out (SO)- it
will say something like 8F. What are the codes for those graphics and what do
they mean? | |

Wait, let's get this straight... you're asking us to interpret another station's code? Sure, why not? It's not exactly the
Voynich manuscript.
Dan Roche knows the score...
Hi Alan,
The codes that NESN uses are pretty
simple. They are codes that have been used for "keeping score" of a baseball
game.
For instance, F-8 is a fly out to the
center fielder. Each position is designated a number when keeping score:
Pitcher-1, catcher-2, first baseman-3, second baseman-4, third baseman-5,
shortstop-6, left fielder-7, center fielder-8, and right fielder-9.
So, a ground ball out to third is
5-3....as the third baseman threw it to the first baseman for the out. A double
play would be 5-4-3....third to second to first.
PO-3...is pop out to first.
A single is a "line" drawn from home to
first. A double is two lines....one from home to first and then first to
second...and so on for triple and home run.
A walk is BB for bases on balls. A hit
batsmen is HBP for hit-by-pitch and a strikeout is usually K. A backwards K is
sometimes used for strikeout looking as opposed to swinging.
Some scoring marks vary from person to
person, but those are the basics.
In my humble opinion....I think the only
way to watch a game is to keep score. That way you know exactly how many outs
there are...what guys have done before, etc. It keeps me in the game. And, it
makes a great souvenir if it's a big game.
I hope that helps.
