San Francisco, known for being a
baseball town was also a swimming town.
Fleishhacker Baths was at one time the
largest outdoor swimming pool in the
world at 1000 feet long by 150 feet
wide. Offically opening April 23, 1925,
the pool was so large that the life
guard patrolled it by row boat.
In 1971 a storm damaged the pipes that
fed the ocean into the pool. The pool
was emptied and filled with fresh water.
Algae bloomed like crazy and the pool
was closed. This location is a
fascinating experience in human nature.
It is a Squatter Metropolis. I can not
even begin to imagine how many years of
garbage is piled in some of the rooms,
or how many people actually live there.
Go see the photo set. It's incredible.
