Eat Your Way Through LA

Posted by Dave_Malkoff

There's so much to discover at The Original Farmer's Market in LA. Even locals who have been coming to the Fairfax District for years don't know all the secrets behind the stores.
To tell those stories, Lisa & Diane Scalia have started up their own walking & eating tour of Los Angeles called Melting Pot Food Tours.

Click the followingf links to sign up for their tour of the Farmer's Market or Old Town Pasadena.  The 3 hour tours cost $50/per person and cover the cost of all the food you eat. You can learn more on their website: www.MeltingPotTours.com

Holiday Shopping Deals

Posted by Dave_Malkoff

Here's a list of the best ways to find the online holiday deals this year:

1) BLACK FRIDAY WEBSITES
Check out BlackFriday.com or Black-Friday.net for some of the hidden online deals. These sites have the inside scoop on store ads before they're printed.  For instance, a full list from Kohls or Wal-Mart's online specials.

2) CHECK TWITTER
I know most holiday shoppers don't use Twitter, but this could be the one time of year you may want to check it out. Sites like CheapTweet.com track twitter updates from stores who offer exclusive deals to their followers. If you have a favorite store, keep an eye on their own twitter page for deals in the next few weeks. Here's a list of some stores on Twitter.  Be the first to know about store twitter updates by installing the free application called TweetDeck

3) BECOME A FACEBOOK FAN
If you have a facebook account, search your favorite store and "become a fan" of that store. Retailers are using a fan list to target advertising. It's very simple, if they know you like their products, they're more likely to send a few deals your way.

4) NEVER BUY ANYTHING UNTIL...
You have checked RetailMeNot.com. You know when you're checking out of an online store and there's a box that says "enter coupon code here"? Well, RetailMeNot.com is where all those coupon codes are stored. Some of these coupon codes only get you a few dollars off, others save you 50% or more. You just have to try a few codes and see which ones work. I never buy purchase anything online without using a coupon code. One time, and this is no joke, I saved over $700 on a laptop this way.

New Dinosaur

Posted by Dave_Malkoff

newdino by you.

You could crush him with your feet... if you lived in Colorado 150 Million years ago. This is Fruitadens haagarorum, the smallest dinosaur in North America. The tiny dinosaur was just discovered by a team that includes Dr. Luis Chiappe, who runs the Dinosaur Institute at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The team just published their new dinosaur find in the Great Britain's Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

As you can see from the drawing, Fruitadens haagarorum was only 28 inches long and weighed much less than a modern chicken... about two pounds. Although the animal's bones were discovered in the 1970's, all the puzzle pieces didn't come together as one dinosaur until tonight when the journal published the team's findings 'across the pond'.

You can check out the scientists hard at work and see the new dinosaur inside the Dino Lab.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is located near downtown in Exposition Park at 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles. Open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm; Tickets are $9 for adults, $6.50 for children. For more information, visit the Museum’s website at www.nhm.org or call (213) 763-DINO.
