UPDATE: Principal has been placed on leave while school department investigates
When some Lawrence teachers heard their principal had published a novel what was their reaction. Were they proud? Were they supportive? No, they were outraged. Why? Some likened the romance novel to "porn"
But what really upset some teachers was the way the principal was hocking her novel. They claim she took every opportunity to sell the book in school, something the teachers union claims is not only unethical but against the law
Beth Gannon is the principal of the Oliver elementary school in Lawrence. Her self-published novel is called "Crazy Fortunes" It's about an engaged woman who falls for a former one time lover.
At least one Lawrence teacher told the Eagle Tribune that the book's sex scenes are far too racy for school and she called it "porn." But the teachers union is more upset at the way Beth Gannon is pushing her novel. They claim she peddles the racy romance book in school at faculty meetings and any other venue she can
The union says she shouldn't be doing that on school property. One school committee member says the principal should be fired. Gannon did not return calls to the Eagle Tribune
Should an elementary school principal be publishing a sexually graphic romance novel in the first place? Don't teachers sell things like girl scout cookies and raffle tickets at school? Why should a book be any different?
