Lightning Safety

Posted by Terry_Eliasen

This week has been deemed lightning safety awareness week by the National Weather Service.

According to Earthguage.net, on average, there are 25 million lightning flashes in the United States each year, which cause an average of 66 deaths and at least 300 injuries. You have a one in five-thousand chance of being injured by lightning at some point during your lifetime. Because the conditions that create lightning are known, but exactly where lightning will strike cannot be predicted, you should always assume that you are in danger of being struck.

Here are some important lightning safety tips from the National Weather Service if you find yourself outdoors during a thunderstorm.  Great tips whether you are in a vehicle, at a sporting event, camping, at the beach and in the water.

If you are indoors there are things to keep in mind as well...ways to protect yourself, your pets and personal property...

And finally some interesting, little known lightning facts...
