“It’s happened again,” for the record, is one my least favorite lines to ever accompany a news story.
But sometimes, it just fits.
A 12-year-old girl from a Boston suburb met somebody online. That man, a 32-year-old from Virginia, hopped on a bus to come meet her. His intentions, according to the FBI agents who arrested him, were less than pure.
It all started, as so many of these stories do, online.
Fact – kids are connected. When they’re not Facebooking, MySpacing or IMing, they are texting. It’s a lot of instant communication that can be tough for parents to keep up with.
Fact – there are plenty of child predators using these same social tools to find their victims.
Do you check what your kids are up to online… or does that feel like an invasion of their privacy? Do we just have to trust that we’ve taught our children well? And, at what age do you think kids should have private computer access?
Who is tracking your children better online – you, or child predators?
We’ll be using some of your feedback on our news at 5pm today.
