If you live in Mill Valley, you may have received a brochure about Measure C, which will show up on ballots tomorrow.
A cursory look at this brochure may lead you to believe one thing, but, as Dick Spotswood points out, the matter is another thing altogether:The cover is an attention-getting "Fires Happen. Prepare!" complete
with flames that alert voters of the fire risk if Measure C doesn't
pass. It's no secret that local voters number one concern is wildland
fire.
It turns out that this brochure is promoting Mill Valley School
District's $58.8 million facilities improvement bond on tomorrow's
ballot. According to school tax proponents, "The bond will have an
annual cost estimated at $19.60 per $100,000 of assessed property value
during the first year of 2010-11, with a projected average tax rate of
$28.64 per $100,000 of assessed valuation for the 28-year life of the
bond."
Measure C has nothing to do with wildland fire prevention.
