CBS 5 is not calling the Prop 8 decision as many other news outlets have, because,
as Joe Vazquez reports, "with 95 percent of precincts reprorting, the ban had 5,163,908
votes, or 52 percent, while there were 4,760,336 votes, or 48 percent,
opposed, a difference of about 400,000 votes. Late absentee and
provisional ballots meant as many as 3 million ballots were left to be
counted after all precinct votes were tallied." With that number of ballots still flapping in the wind, making a definitive call can be troublesome. Where are these ballots coming from (the conservative Central Valley?) is the question on the newsroom's mind. Could Prop 8 fail to pass, even as those opposed to it mourn the loss?
San Francisco doesn't seem to think so.
CBS 5 just reported on air that City Hall is not performing any same sex marriages today, even though 3 million votes have yet to be counted.
