Reactions to Schwarzenegger's Veto

Area bloggers are reacting to Governor Schwarzenegger's announcement that he will veto the state budget. Below is a round-up of local opinion below: (Click each blog name to read the posts in full.)

[E]ven though the top state income tax bracket is 9.3%, this budget which the Democratic-majority, Republican-controlled State Assembly  (it makes sense, really) passed indicates that we will now have to withhold 10%. The extra will be refunded the next year.

Wow.

Really, you can’t tell me that another state has thought of doing this before. This has got to be precedent setting.

While California has a $17 billion budget deficit, taxpayers are subsidizing the college education of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who pay in-state tuition. Meanwhile, out-of-state citizens pay the higher nonresident tuition at California’s public universities and colleges.

With the state running out of money, and with real consequences happening to poor people, the Democrats blinked. The legislature passed an atrocious budget that has $3 billion in cuts to public schools, $1.4 billion in cuts to health and human services—and in a stunning display of fiscal irresponsibility, borrows $15 billion from next year’s revenues. Schwarzenegger vetoed the budget—putting everything back to square one.
