Daily Kos:While people may debate whether this is good or bad for the party, I
have friends and acquaintances who were married in San Francisco a few
years ago, and I celebrate the recognition, in this state, that their
unions, and unions to come, are not separate but equal, but are
recognized in the eyes of the law as identical.
Delusional Rants:Of course the news mentioned some organizations may try to get a
measure on the ballot to re-write the state's constitution but meh, I
still have faith my state will do the right thing and for now, gays and
lesbians have the same rights to marry that I have... and if they're
crazy enough to marry, more power to them ;)
if a tree falls in the forest...:We are still a long ways from having it legalized across the nation.
California legalized marriage between blacks and whites long before the
rest of the nation did. But it's a start. A very happy start.
Bring It On!:
Of course the haters already have a petition drive underway to change
the state constitution to restrict marriage to members of the opposite
sex.
Legal Pad:
The ruling identifies gays and lesbians (hereafter referred to as "gay
couples") as a "suspect class," which it has never done before. This
opens up a whole world of discrimination claims.
Gay Marriage for All!*:
Oh
my gawd... this feels so good! It's like a huge weight has lifted, and
the ache in my stomach that started about 5 minutes before the ruling
was posted is gone - thank you so, so much to the California Supreme
Court for overturning the mean-spirited Prop 22 and giving us the
dignity we've fought for so long.
Sam Spade:We won! Marriage equality is now legal in California. The ban against same-sex marriage is gone, gone GONE!
Brock at SFist:
[C]ongratulations, homosexuals. Feel free to register here and here and here.
Cyrus Farivar:I’m proud to be Californian.
Indybay:Now, we gotta beat back the right-wing asses that have the signatures
for a ballot proposition to change the CA Constitution and overrule
anything the Supreme Court can ever do on the subject.
Left in SF:
Start the countdown before someone starts complaining about how this is going to galvanize the right wing.
The Snitch:
My phone is ringing off the hook with friends celebrating the Supreme
Court's 4-3 decision to throw out the ban on gay marriage, making
California the second U.S. state to legalize same-sex weddings.
Calitics:
[A] nice little touch
concludes the directive: "Further, as the prevailing parties,
plaintiffs are entitled to their costs." Ha!! Take that bigots!
Justices
Baxtar, Corrigan, and Chin dissented. All of them, however, wrote that
they believe that same sex marriages should be recognized. However,
they do not believe that the Constitution mandates such recognition.
[More as I find them.]
*I love this blog name. Not just gay marriage for gay people, but gay marriage for all! Haha.
