Best Companies to Work For

Work benefits are always a hot topic here in our office. Some people say the perks companies provide really can make a difference in their quality of life at the office. Others argue they'd rather have personal time away from the office.

What would make you happier in your job? Does your company do anything you think is worthy of a mention? If so, click the "add a comment" link or let me know by sending me an e-mail. I'll post some of your responses below.

We are fortunate to have several really good companies headquartered here in Minnesota. The best thing about many of them is that they really cater to their employees. This doesn't mean people don't work hard, but the perks many of these places provide help push them to the top of many nationwide lists of best companies.

The important thing to remember is often companies submit information to be considered for these lists. That doesn't mean they aren't worthy of the accolades, it's just an important reminder that some companies don't take the time to do this. Tonight at ten I'll take you behind the scenes of General Mills and show you why many employees say the company ranks at the top of many of these lists.

Below I've mentioned a few of the lists that have mentioned Minnesota companies recently.

Fortune Magazine recently came out with its top 100 companies to work for in 2008. The Mayo Clinic was number 59 because 17% of its workforce has worked there for more than 20 years. General Mills was rated 69 for its policy to let working moms phase back into work after having a baby.

Working Mother magazine asks companies to provide data for their 'best of' lists. This year the magazine listed the best companies for multicultural women and weighted its scores based on the number of multicultural women within the company, how the companies recruit and how they are able to retain those women. Here is the complete list. General Mills was the only company to make this list. According to the company "43 managers and one corporate executive who are women of color started at the company as college interns."

Eight small companies made Forbes Magazine's list of best small companies.
