It's one of the questions I get asked about most: "When should I buy my kid a cell phone?" Tonight at ten I talk to parents, kids and experts to give you some of the research and the tools to help you make the right decision for your family.
Carrie Rasmussen and her husband decided their kids don't need cell phones until they turn 16. "I worry about setting an example of having a luxury that maybe they don't need or can't afford by the time they're on their own," she said. "Maybe they help pay for it. That way they learn about life's true expenses."

The Center on Media and Child Health offers up the pros of giving your child a cell phone, for example being able to reach them in an emergency. It also details some of the negatives like how kids are using cell phones to bully other students. The site even provides parents with some pointers on how to talk to their kids about the issue.
Regardless of what you decide I thought it would be helpful to have information about cell phones, plans and insurance.
Phones
Wirefly put together a list of some of the best cell phones for kids. They include phones that stream live video, those with music players and phones with big keypads to make texting easy.
The CBS Early Show also did a segment in August showing some of the hottest phones for kids. So did CNET.
Cell Phone Insurance
I remember my mother-in-law talking about how many times my youngest brother-in-law lost his cell phone. At one point I believe she bought three new phones within six months time.
There are several companies that offer cell phone insurance to help cover the cost of replacing a lost or stolen cell phone. It can cost as little as $4 a month, but there are some things to remember. Many of these plans require that you pay a deductible and then when you do get a replacement it may be refurbished or used.
Apparently 50 million people buy cell phone insurance. Bankrate says it's a total waste of money. One big reason: your phone's warranty may cover you. Another reason is the cost. Do the math. Most cell phone contracts last two years so if you're spending $5 a month that's $60 a year, $120 over two years. Is your phone worth that? So be sure to read all of your paperwork before making the investment.
