Tonight, we're going to answer the question at least a dozen of you have sent in: Why doesn't the government lower the speed limit to 55 mph like they did in the 1970s? (The Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act did that in 1974)
Driving 55 instead of 65 saves about 5 miles per gallon. Which wasn't a huge deal when gasoline cost $2.50 a gallon. Now it's serious money. I figure, if you get 30 mpg on the highway, and drive 90 miles (Minneapolis to Rochester), it'll cost you $2.60 less if you drive 55 (and get 25 mpg).
The trip would take you 13 minutes longer, incidentally.
