What would you expect to see at an annual holiday sale? Items depicting Santa? Candy canes? Christmas trees? Stockings?
Not at Byam Elementary in Chelmsford.
Anything depicting the holiday (or Hanukkah, for that matter) is banned. And lest there be any confusion, the school sent students home with a letter stating, explicitly, what is NOT allowed.
The debate over Christmas expands into new territory every year.
The holiday has its defenders. But will we, one day in the future, argue over the sing-along at the Holiday Pops? Or the appearance of Globe Santa in Copley Square?
Will the Christmas tree on Boston Common become a "giving garden"? (One Florida university has already made that change.)
What do you think? Is Chelmsford's rule a sensitive way to make sure no one feels left out? Or a Scrooge-y move that confuses kids and goes too far?
