CBS 5's Frank Viviano is back with another World View column, a
look at the end if the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, in a piece exclusive to CBS5.com:
In a cataclysm of terrible bloodshed, the Tamil insurrection in Sri
Lanka has reached its end. The last 1,500-2,000 fighters of the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the main rebel force, were
inextricably penned into the island nation's northeast corner by
government forces in the final week of April. The Tigers' defeat
climaxes a 26-year war that killed more than 100,000 Sri Lankans,
minority Hindu Tamil and majority Buddhist Sinhalese alike – the oldest
ongoing major conflict on Earth, according to the UN.
It also marks the wane of savage ethnic-minority rebellions that dominated the geopolitical stage for a generation.
