A trespasser was injured when struck by a train just north of the Hillsdale Caltrain station in San Mateo this afternoon, affecting train schedules.
Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said the victim was hit around 3:30 p.m. by the southbound No. 257 train at 25th Avenue. The individual was transported to an area hospital but the condition of the victim was not available, she said.
Dunn said trains were running at reduced speeds on the southbound track but that the northbound track was closed.
The San Mateo County Transportation department's Public Information Officer issued this statement:
At approximately 4:20 p.m., the
northbound track was opened and returned to service. Both the north- and the
southbound tracks are now open.
At approximately 3:30 p.m.
northbound train #257 struck a trespasser at 25th Avenue in San
Mateo. The individual has been transported to the hospital. This is a crossing
with gates, lights and bells.
This is the fourth person hit by Caltrain in San Mateo Co. since October 30th.[links when available]
UPDATE, 4:49 p.m.: An update from the Public Information Officer:
At approximately 3:30 p.m. a female
attempted to cross the tracks in front of a northbound train. She was taken by
helicopter to Stanford Hospital. An investigation indicates that the gates,
lights and bells were operating at the time of the incident. No other
information about the victim will be available from Caltrain.
Train delays from 10 to 30 minutes
are expected to last until 5:00 p.m.
