[A]t Herrera's event, the buzz in the room was all about Gavin. Vazquez had broken the story that our mayor was off to Hawaii to "regroup." And the reaction of those I spoke with was one big eyeroll. A no-show at yesterday's Willie Brown breakfast, the consensus was that Newsom should've sucked it up and made the classy rounds on election day. Apparently, both Browns and Kindergarten Cop got a few Newsom-digs in, but quite frankly, I'd be in Hawaii too.
At one point last night, someone called Gavin a sore loser, and I have to admit, I felt a little heart pang. Poor fella. No one likes to lose, and this whole "I should be Governor" thing was so public, so far fetched. I remembered the night years before, before I had this blog and before Gavin and I got on the wagon. I found myself boozing it up in the backroom of this very same bar chatting with Gavin Newsom and was beside myself with glee. Now he's hiding in Hawaii and I'm feeling bad for him. It's like watching the big man on campus trip on the football field and totally eat it at the Homecoming Game. You never quite look at him the same way again.
The man of the hour, Dennis Herrera, hopped on a chair and thanked everyone. I was really hoping he'd reveal his mayoral intentions. That joint would've exploded, they were all so in love with him. Isn't this the guy we sue if we get hit by a bus? Just checking.
