What's in a name...

Portuguese Bend

A stretch of road along Palos Verdes Drive in Rancho Palos Verdes.  It was the site of a whaling station in the 1850’s….Staffed by Portuguese whalers.

After running out of firewood to render gray whale blubber into oil…they were forced to abandond the station in the 1880’s.  It is one of the most geologically unstable stretches of land in Los Angeles…moving a few inches every year.
