An unsurprising, but still entirely depressing, ruling came down from
the CA Supreme Court today. Crowds gathered in SF outside city hall to
await the ruling:
The California Supreme Court upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex
marriage Tuesday, but also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay
couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.
The announcement set off angry chants and screams from the sea of
hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered in front of the San
Francisco courthouse awaiting the ruling. Holding signs and many waving
rainbow flags, they yelled "shame on you!"
A large crowd then started marching from the Supreme Court building,
walking through the city's streets. Many people held hands in a chain
around the intersection of Van Ness and Gates in an act of protest --
snarling traffic and disrupting Muni bus service.
The argument that Prop 8 had revised the state's equal protection clause was a tough one to make from the get-go, and legal analysts fully expected this decision. But, that doesn't make it any easier to take.
The Court ruled today that a legitimate amendment to the California constitution had been made in November. Besides the anger, the injustice, the embarrassment and the sadness of it all, doesn't this raise the question: DO you think it is too easy to amend the state constitution?
Eye on Blogs wants to hear from you. Are you outraged by this decision? Are you glad the Court upheld Prop 8? What did you think about the fairness of the justices verdict on the matter?
