According to the AP wires, a vigil is being planned tonight in Oakland for felon, suspected child rapist and police murderer, Lovelle Mixon:
As Oakland police and community member mourn the loss of four officers, a group plans to remember the man accused of gunning them down.
The group, called International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, is holding a vigil tonight for Lovelle Mixon. Authorities say Mixon fatally shot two officers during a traffic stop Saturday, then killed two more after the manhunt led to a shootout at an apartment building. Mixon also was killed. Kihad Deen, a member of the group, says he doesn't condone what Mixon did, but says it highlights frustrations between the community and the police.
The 6 p.m. vigil is set to take place a day after hundreds gathered at a city-sponsored event to honor the four officers. [emphasis mine]
It's hard to hide my disgust. If you want to hold a rally or a town hall or a public discussion about what is a very real discontent between police and citizens in Oakland, then do it. But to throw a vigil in honor of a man who shot and killed four men serving in the line of duty--fathers to toddlers, husbands to wives--is a slap in the face to decency as a whole.
