Not As Famous As Jon Stewart, But ...

Twin Cities cognoscenti, literati, and snarki alike are all pumped about the "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" tapings that are happening this week at the History Theater. Indeed, I saw a number of people queued in line as early as noon today, presumably hoping for the best seat.

Down a few blocks, and maybe also down a few pegs in the zeitgeist, is Spike Feresten. Don't know why, when I caught a glimpse of his bus on Cedar, he wasn't surrounded like Jon Stewart, who reportedly greatly enjoys his breakfasts at Mickey's Diner. (And who doesn't?) His cool credentials are solid. He's written and produced for shows as objectively awesome as "Space Ghost Coast To Coast" and "The Simpsons." He, in fact, wrote the "Soup Nazi" episode of "Seinfeld."

Check out the signage on the bus for his talk show, um, "Talkshow with Spike Feresten":

In case that's not quite legible, the banner on the back says "Gay Republicans get behind us!" It was his tribute to our state's infamous run-in with an alleged toe-tapping Larry Craig.

He was heavily involved in an exclusive interview with FOX, which is the network his show airs on. He did give me and the competing network I represent a nice thumbs up, though.

Explaining his bus, he told the FOX interviewer that, according to his statistics, 52 percent of Republicans are gay, and an additionally 20 percent or so were, at that very moment, thinking about something gay. I may have gotten the numbers incorrect, but that's probably because I'm certain he too had his numbers a little mixed up.

Darcy@STYX ...There were many equipment malfunctions -- guitars, microphones, etc. I'm a little dissapointed. Otherwise having a great time.

There are many big wigs ... we dont know who any of them are though.

Free CivicFest And More

The Minneapolis St. Paul Host Committee just announced that they're waiving the admission for CivicFest for the rest of the exhibit's stay in the Twin Cities. The committee said it hopes people donate the original cost of admission to Hurricane Gustav relief.

For the record -- admission before was $15 for adults and $10 for children.

Here's a slideshow of some of what you will see there.

Also, we're getting late word that John McCain has canceled his rally that was scheduled for Wednesday morning in Peavey Plaza.

Concessions have been set up near the rally site in St. Paul. A sandwich, pop and chips will cost you $10.

Sheryl Crow is going to be in St. Paul Monday. She's expected to lead the antiwar march that starts after the 11 a.m. rally on the lawn of the state Capitol.

The Show Must Go On?

As the RNC gets underway, nearly all the talk seems to be on whether it will get any further than "underway." Check out Esme's blog from this morning for the latest buzz on that count.

That said, the show is still in "must go on" mode. Case in point, all the building managers here at 'CCO magically appeared in the newsroom this Sunday morning, just in time for Katie Couric to walk into our studio.
